THE GRASS HOPPER

The Ant and the Grasshopper
In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"
"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.
When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger - while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.

Home made survival kit

survival kit

Creating a homemade survival kit is an affordable alternative to purchasing a pre-made kit. Making your own kit allows you to choose the items that you or your family may want or need. Creating your own kit allows for flexibility in the amount of items and type of items that you include.
Backpacks with many pockets are excellent to use as a disaster survival kit. In the event of a disaster, this design allows you to grab the kit as you head out the door. Since you wear this type of bag on your back, you will have the use of both hands. Small, wheeled luggage is also a good choice when making your own homemade survival kit.The most important item in your kit will be an action plan, sit with the family and write down the things that will help you when you are to scared to think. When my family traveled we would pick a place to meet if we got separated . The plan you make now can save you latter.

THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR KIT

1.SPACE BLANKET,,,BLANKET

2.FIRST AID,,,1ST AID SUPPLY
You probably already have the basic items needed to make a first aid kit in your medicine cabinet. Bandaids, gauze pads, medical tape, antibacterial ointment and hand soap are the first items needed. You will also want a pair of sharp scissors, tweezers and a magnifying glass in your homemade survival kit.

3.WATER,,,TABLET
Water purification tablets such as the Katadyn Micropur will allow you to provide safe water without having to store or carry it. A water filter bottle should also be carried in each grab-n-go bag.

4.FOOD,,,MRE
Ready to eat foods are a necessity for every survival kit. MRE’s (meals ready to eat) provide complete nutrition. Dried fruits, nuts, peanut butter crackers and protein bars are also high calorie foods that pack well. Instant oatmeal, grits and soup that can be prepared with hot water pack and store well. Mountain House freeze-dried meals are lightweight, take up very little room in your kit and will last for years.

5.LIGHT,,,RADIO,,,LIGHT
Experts agree that any type of disaster kit should contain all the necessities for three days. You need to include food, water, clothing and a first aid kit. You definitely want to include a flashlight with at least one extra set of batteries, or a hand-cranked flashlight/radio combo; a radio is a helpful item that allows you to head weather alerts or news bulletins.

6.PERSONAL ITEMS
In addition to one complete change of clothing, you should pack additional socks. Sturdy shoes, a hat, and gloves must be included. Ideally, each member of the family should have their own survival kit. Including a few small toys, a book, or a comfort item in a child‘s kit can help reduce anxiety during an emergency.

7.IMPORTANT PAPERS
During an emergency important papers and documents are often overlooked. Make copies of important documents such as deeds, birth certificates, driver’s licenses and immunization cards for everyone. Place these papers in a doubled Ziploc bag for protection from the elements and place in an inner pocket of your kit, along with a duplicate credit or debit card and some cash.
