THE GRASS HOPPER
The Ant and the Grasshopper
In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"
"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.
When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger - while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.

Around the House
There are many things around the house that you should consider taking with you if you need to leave. You should make a list of these items ,so when you need to leave you can check them off your list. Your bicycle ,wagon, and hand tools should be on the list.Large plastic garbage bags, silk stockings, rubber bands, paper clips and house hold scissors can have many different uses in a emergency situation. Sit with your family and brainstorm about the items that may be needed, talk to other families that store and get ideas from them, you can never have to many ideas.Spend one day a month learning with and teaching survival skills to your family.Practice the skills you have learned, have a competition and see who can start a fire without matches the fastest.
Information Please
There is a ton of information on the internet about survival and food storage. The problem is that the internet may not be working when you need the information. You should print information you want and create a family preparedness note book.

Soul Food
a point of view
Joseph Smith
Nothing is so much calculated to lead people to forsake sin as to take them by the hand, and watch over them with tenderness. When persons manifest the least kindness and love to me, O what power it has over my mind, while the opposite course has a tendency to harrow up all the harsh feelings and depress the human mind.
Brigham Young
President Brigham Young saw the need for charity, “the pure love of Christ,” to smooth the path of life. His actions toward Lucy Groves are an example of his kindness and service to others: On the westward trek, Lucy fell under the wheel of the family wagon, breaking her leg and several ribs. President Young set the broken leg and gave her a blessing. A few days later Lucy’s daughter stumbled over the leg and broke it a second time. In agony at every step the oxen took, Lucy asked her husband to pull out of the wagon train and let the others go on without them. President Young declared he would not leave them at the side of the road in dangerous territory. He instructed several men to cut the legs off Lucy’s poster bed and suspend the frame from the wagon bows so the mattress and springs would swing easily, like a hammock. President Young then renewed his blessing to Lucy and rode by her side for several days to make sure she had no further trouble. “With his gentle kind manner,” wrote Lucy’s grandson, “he won the love of Lucy and her posterity forever” (HRF, 157–58) as you do unto others
David O. McKay
"Let my assure you, Brethren, that some day you will have a personal Priesthood interview with the Savior, Himself. If you are interested, I will tell you the order in which He will ask you to account for your earthly responsibilities.
First, He will request an accountability report about your relationship with your wife. Have you actively been engaged in making her happy and ensuring that her needs have been met as an individual?
Second, He will want an accountability report about each of your children individually. He will not attempt to have this for simply a family stewardship but will request information about your relationship to each and every child.
Third, He will want to know what you personally have done with the talents you were given in the pre-existence.
Fourth, He will want a summary of your activity in your church assignments. He will not be necessarily interested in what assignments you have had, for in his eyes the home teacher and a mission president are probably equals, but He will request a summary of how you have been of service to your fellowmen in your Church assignments.
Fifth, He will have no interest in how you earned your living, but if you were honest in all your dealings.
Sixth, He will ask for an accountability on what you have done to contribute in a positive manner to your community, state, country, and the world."
— David O. McKay
Spencer W. Kimball
We must be trained to clarify minds, heal broken hearts, and create homes where sunshine will make an environment in which mental and spiritual health may be nurtured. Our schooling must not only teach us how to bridge the Niagara River gorge, or the Golden Gate, but must teach us how to bridge the deep gaps of misunderstanding and hate and discord in the world." — Spencer W. Kimball

Home made survival kit
survival kit
Creating a homemade survival kit is an affordable alternative to purchasing a pre-made kit. Making your own kit allows you to choose the items that you or your family may want or need. Creating your own kit allows for flexibility in the amount of items and type of items that you include.
Backpacks with many pockets are excellent to use as a disaster survival kit. In the event of a disaster, this design allows you to grab the kit as you head out the door. Since you wear this type of bag on your back, you will have the use of both hands. Small, wheeled luggage is also a good choice when making your own homemade survival kit.The most important item in your kit will be an action plan, sit with the family and write down the things that will help you when you are to scared to think. When my family traveled we would pick a place to meet if we got separated . The plan you make now can save you latter.
THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR KIT
1.SPACE BLANKET,,,BLANKET
2.FIRST AID,,,1ST AID SUPPLY
You probably already have the basic items needed to make a first aid kit in your medicine cabinet. Bandaids, gauze pads, medical tape, antibacterial ointment and hand soap are the first items needed. You will also want a pair of sharp scissors, tweezers and a magnifying glass in your homemade survival kit.
3.WATER,,,TABLET
Water purification tablets such as the Katadyn Micropur will allow you to provide safe water without having to store or carry it. A water filter bottle should also be carried in each grab-n-go bag.
4.FOOD,,,MRE
Ready to eat foods are a necessity for every survival kit. MRE’s (meals ready to eat) provide complete nutrition. Dried fruits, nuts, peanut butter crackers and protein bars are also high calorie foods that pack well. Instant oatmeal, grits and soup that can be prepared with hot water pack and store well. Mountain House freeze-dried meals are lightweight, take up very little room in your kit and will last for years.
5.LIGHT,,,RADIO,,,LIGHT
Experts agree that any type of disaster kit should contain all the necessities for three days. You need to include food, water, clothing and a first aid kit. You definitely want to include a flashlight with at least one extra set of batteries, or a hand-cranked flashlight/radio combo; a radio is a helpful item that allows you to head weather alerts or news bulletins.
6.PERSONAL ITEMS
In addition to one complete change of clothing, you should pack additional socks. Sturdy shoes, a hat, and gloves must be included. Ideally, each member of the family should have their own survival kit. Including a few small toys, a book, or a comfort item in a child‘s kit can help reduce anxiety during an emergency.
7.IMPORTANT PAPERS
During an emergency important papers and documents are often overlooked. Make copies of important documents such as deeds, birth certificates, driver’s licenses and immunization cards for everyone. Place these papers in a doubled Ziploc bag for protection from the elements and place in an inner pocket of your kit, along with a duplicate credit or debit card and some cash.

The shelf life of Spam, as indicated by the Hormel website, is "indefinate". It also states that spam will be safe to eat a lot longer than the Enjoy By date, although the flavor will decrease over time.
Spam is part of my survival kit...remember store what you will eat, and eat what you store and create a calender to assist you in rotating your food. Mark a purchase date on all your cans.
Val Flores "Store what your family will eat and rotate your food.....use your storage and replace what you use. You do not want to get sick by eating something your body is not use to....done that!"
